I was lucky enough to work with Comedy Central in helping design and develop experimental websites for some of the network’s flagship shows. The biggest project we took on was for the promotion of the fifth season of one of my favorites — Workaholics. The product involved a number of intricate user experiences that were vital to the promotion of the upcoming season.
The trailer for season five of Workaholics was a take on something you’re more likely to see from a Michael Bay movie. In an effort to get fans engaged, Comedy Central promoted a remix competition. We needed to facilitate all the core components of the action-style preview to the audience, and give them a place to submit and advocate for their creations. The resulting UX design gave users a place to do so while also serving as a home for other promotional materials.
My favorite piece was a custom meme generator we designed and built from the ground up. This allowed fans to overlay their favorite catchphrases from the show on top of gifs from the trailer, and then share those assets out to their friends. The product needed to comply with Viacom legal standards to be sure nothing bearing the network or show’s likeness had anything unsavory embedded, and so we built in protections against certain explicit materials and phrases.
The site generated well over a million unique visitors, thousands of memes and remixes, and industry acclaim for the experience design.
