While I was finishing up my master’s degree at Northwestern, I was also beginning to consult and pitch brands on a host of content strategy services. Upon moving back to New York, I eventually landed my first project and teamed up with a partner. With no outside backing we co-founded Mayday in 2011, and opened our first office in the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn.
Mayday was a digitally-focused studio with strengths in the creation of brand systems and experimental web experiences. If you were to take a walk through the studio on any given day, you might see the identity creation for a new housing solution in New York, or the user experience design for a Levi’s® microsite, or the development of a soundboard for an upcoming season of Broad City. The range of projects and verticals we tackled was echoed in our motto, “Mayday is making everything.”
Growing an agency from scratch involved wearing many hats. In the early years I practiced a number of disciplines including content strategy, user experience design, and project management. As we built out our internal team, I would begin to focus more on overseeing product and user experience design while developing and managing technical solutions partners. I also spent a large portion of my time in business development and client relations, working on fostering positive relationships that would lead to agency growth.
During my tenure we consistently multiplied revenue 2x year over year, grew out of three different office spaces, created award winning campaigns, had viral moments, and built an incredibly talented team of creatives, designers, art directors and technical personnel. I left the agency in mid-2015 and joined betaworks’ Hacker in Residence program shortly thereafter.
